my FINAL DRAWINGS

its been a long road but i've now settled on the style that i would like to use and begun my drawings.
below i have uploaded a few. with these i have used photoshop to give them the exact same sepia shade. i am very pleased with them and will soon photoshop them into frames to give them the same sort of look as the medical photographs

as with the last posts this is some older work that i did. i did these to gain a better understanding of the types of collars and neckpeices that i would like to use in my drawings as they are one of the most potent signs of the type of character that you are drawing especially when you are doing a drawing which is very expressionless and simple

this one is a bit small so i have uploaded some close ups of my favourite drawings plus a few more that arent on this sheet.

some earlier developmental work

these are some experimental drawings that i did a while back on loose sheets of paper.. the first three are from observation of a book called the mutter museum and they are different from my normal style of drawing, i decided to be more observational and loose.. i really like this effect and style however it doesnt really fit in well with the style of the book.






with these drawings i tried to be more open and interpretive and i think that its worked well however i dont think that this is a style that i will adopt for my book. when i did these i had the feeling that my work had been lacking colour and this was a refreshing change

now that i am begining my drawings i am starting to look at the visual nature of the patients. here i have uploaded what i beleive to be the architypal styles and characters of the patients from the various books that i have been looking at.
the first thing that strikes me is the expressionless faces and the way that the photograph is aimed completely at the diseases as opposed to the person and takes a very disconnected view of the people, seeing them less as humans and more as subject, vessels for their ailments.
the next is that they are all dressed in smart victorian clothes. buttoned shirts, narrow lapels etc. and this is something that i will definately take into my drawings to keep in with the style of the images that i have been looking at. im going to have a go at drawing and interpreting this style of clothing. so at the moment i plan on combining the aesthetic style of Gorey with the composition, tone and overall feel of these images.
next is the frames that surround each image. these are clearly for archiving and medical purposes but i think that they are very interesting, they give the images a very serious, important look whilst also framing them beautifully with their rough edges and scribbled notes. i think that i would definately use frames like this to surround my final images so reinforce the theme of the serious medical images.

chris orrs style of drawing is very similar to the work or edward gorey in the sense that his characters are very simple yet well observed and look as though they were drawn for children but in the same way as gorey it has a more adult humour to it. what he creates is a very simple, pleasing and charming cartoony style image which is much the way that i plan to work in . this to me exemplifies good illustration in the sense that it captures the image and conveys the message intended while still possessing its own character and conveys the artists intentions. what we see in Orr's work is the what HE sees as essential in the image while still creating a fully tangible strong sense of reality

these pictures are from a blog called fake science. they are in the same vein as the 'look around you' videos in the sense that aesthetically they look like serious educational material but the content is completely farcical and bares no truth. also they have the same kind of 80s aesthetic the videos. this style is something that is really influencing me at the moment and is helping me to fine tune my image of what i will produce; a very austere, serious book that is filled with strange descriptions. my images will also take on this style.. a very serious style with very little expression.

THE GASHLYCRUMB TINIES

these are pages from gorey's book. the first thing that i pick up about this book is the way that the book itself has a very bleak feel, even from just the cover with its dark, autumnal green and the low key drawing of the gashlycrumb family. this book takes a dark satirical view on death which is the same sort of approach that i would like to take with my book. the way that each page is presented also comes off very well in the book as it is all single sided, meaning that you are repeatedly presented with very singular images which seem to run like a slideshow. i think that this is how i will present my final book... very simplistically, with low key, understated almost etherial images such as those seen in ikkaku ochi's book.

Edward St. John Gorey (ca. February 22, 1925 – April 15, 2000) was an American writer and artist noted for his macabre illustrated books.
what i like about this style is its purity and simplicity in its forms that juxtapose the physical drawing technique that he has used. in his work you rarely find block tones and instead he uses what looks like a sporadic and 'scratchy' style of drawing that creates a dark, macabre feel in his books.
his characters also interest me and give me alot of ideas for how i would like to present my book, their falawn posture and almost expressionless faces convey the bleak world that gorey is working to create excellently and i would like to look into developin this style into my own work. i have also located a book of his that is very relevant to my work called the 'Gashlycrumb Tinies'. samples of which i will upload in my next post.

THIS IS A LINK FOR ANOTHER ARTIST THAT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT CALLED HAN HOOGERBRUGGE. especially the work that is at the end of this link. i cannot upload his work to this blog because it is short videos and i am not allowed to steal them. his surrealist approach STUNS me.. the way that this mans mind must work is a mystery.. in his work he often creates interactive animations that touch deep on the human psyche. visually his work starts out very bland, often with a man dressed in a suit but when the user interacts the character will react in untold ways that will shock and amaze. this is another take on the serious/satirical thing that i am going for and he does it very well
